Nestled in the lap of serene Garwhal Himalayas, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Shri Kedarnath ji and Shri Badrinath ji are the four major pilgrimage destinations of Char Dham Yatra. Traditionally, the Char dham yatra starts from west to east, thus pilgrims’ first visit Yamonotri then Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama or clockwise circulation.
Yamunotri lies in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas. Goddess Yamuna the river goddess is worshipped here and has special significance in Hindu scriptures. The idol is made of black marble. The river Yamuna emerges from Yamunotri glacier which is at a height of 4420 m near the Kalind Mountain. The temple was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. A hot sulphur spring pond is situated at Yamunotri close to the temple. Nearby Places of interest include Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Sayanachatti, Janakichatti and Hanuman Chatti.
Gangotri is located at distance of 99 kms from Uttarkashi. The temple, constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, is situated on the left bank of Bhagirathi. It is visited by lakhs of pilgrims every year. Gangotri is one of the Char Dhams in the Garhwal Himalayas is the most sacred spot where Ganga first touched earth for the first time. Just a dip in the Ganga and you are absolved of all sins, such is the importance of the Ganga in the Hindu mythology.
The mountains capes of the majestic Kedarnath range stand one of the twelve ' Jyotirlingas' of Lord shiva. Kedarnath is the seat of Lord Shiva Lying at an altitude of 3584 m at the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimage for the Hindus. The present temple, built in 8th century A.D. by Adi Shankaracharya, stands adjacent to the site of an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The inner walls of the assembly hall are decorated with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. Outside the temple door a large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard.
Badrinath is not only one of the Char Dhams or the four holy shrines in Uttarakhand but the shrine is also one of the main Char Dhams of India. The holy temple at Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Badrinath Temple is situated on the bank of the Alaknanda in the middle of two mountain ranges called Nar and Narayan. Adi Shankarcharya established the idol of Vishnu in the temple. Near the temple is a hot water sulphur spring, Tapt Kund.
